The European Motorcyclists Association is fighting to keep rider data safe.

Your motorbike may track and report on everything from the moment you leave to when you arrive at your destination. FEMA feels that reality is around the horizon. The organization is taking aggressive measures to solve this possible situation.

Tracking for safety

Yet, FEMA isn’t creating the issue out of thin air. Legislators and automakers are working on privacy legislation to safeguard motorists’ personal information. Automotive manufacturers and users alike are delegating driving duties to computers thanks to advances in autonomous vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology.

So, onboard devices track the automobile’s position and speed. Rider data storage and access may soon become a challenge with these measures. It will aid networked ecosystems and provide crucial input for future versions. Several states have considered legislation to regulate the gathering and using of such data to cut misuse. These states include California, Virginia, and Colorado. Yet, FEMA wants to go ahead of the curve for motorcycles.

Previous applications of rider data

As a rule of thumb, new innovations first appear in automobiles before making their way to the motorcycle industry. For example, adaptive cruise control was initially launched in 1992 by Mitsubishi. Still, bikes didn’t have the technology until the 2021 Ducati Multistrada V4. While self-driving bikes are still a long way off, V2V and V2X technologies might help motorcycle riders be more visible to other drivers. As a result, these improvements would have a significant positive impact on safety.

Safety vs privacy

Despite the benefits of future technology, some bikers may not be able to use them because of privacy concerns. There must be some way for the motorbike owner to select who has access to the rider data, FEMA stated in a prepared statement. Permission-based checks are the norm for most people who use computers or mobile devices.

If a company wants to access your browser cookies or your phone’s photo gallery, it must first ask for your permission. According to FEMA’s letter to the European Commission (EC), vehicle data should be held to the same level. With driverless, V2V, and V2X technologies on the rise, regulating data tracking and usage isn’t just a matter for drivers. It’s an issue for the whole transportation industry.
