Triumph Motorcycles America filed a safety recall report with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on August 16, 2023, for all 2022–2024 Triumph Trident 660 motorcycles, as well as 2022–2024 Triumph Tiger Sport 660 motorcycles, due to a potential engine stalling issue. The issue is due to a hose obstruction and faulty sensor data that is giving wrong information to the engine control unit (ECU).
According to Triumph Motorcycles America statistics, about 7,541 bikes may fall in this recall. If you own a Trident 660 or Tiger Sport 660 from 2022 to 2024, this recall applies to you, and you should seek service as soon as possible.
Cause of engine stalling
The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) hose on the concerned bikes may become clogged. As a result, the MAP sensor may record inaccurate data, which it will then relay to the ECU. The ECU modifies the fuel/air mixture based in part on data from the MAP sensor. If it lacks the necessary information, it may result in an unstable engine idle, which may cause the engine to stall.
Triumph Trident 660s from 2021 to 2024 were manufactured between January 6, 2021, and July 27, 2023. The concerned Trident 660 VINs vary from SMTL10UL5NTAE9988 to SMTL10UL8RTBP8186. Affected Triumph Tiger Sport 660 models from 2021 to 2024 were manufactured between August 3, 2021, and August 4, 2023.
An irregular engine idle, according to Triumph’s study, is one potential warning flag that owners should be aware of. According to the terms of this recall, authorized Triumph dealers will inspect and service the vehicle at no cost to the client. The original single hose will have a replacement with a new three-branch hose with a completely different component number as part of the service.
Triumph stance on this recall
On August 18, 2023, Triumph alerted their dealer network in the United States. At the same time, it issued a Stop Sale Notice to dealers for all bikes affected by the recall until the problem may address successfully. In Triumph’s archives, the documentation for this recall refers as Safety Recall Action Notice 609.
Triumph intends to notify registered owners of impacted motorcycles by August 31, 2023. As of August 8, 2023, production bikes in both the Trident 660 and Tiger Sport 660 lines have had the replacement part integrated into the assembly process. All motorcycles manufactured after that date will have the correct hose attached and will not be subject to this recall.
