Introducing WebSockets Bringing Sockets to the Web Articles

HTTP and WebSocket both are communication protocols used in client-server communication. Each string should represent a sub-protocol name and server accepts only one of passed sub-protocols in the array. Accepted sub-protocol can be determined by accessing protocol property of WebSocket object. Nowadays, we typically develop loosely coupled, separate backends and frontends by connecting the two with a network-oriented communication line. Sports websites and event ticketing platforms use WebSockets to provide real-time score updates, commentary, and ticket availability, enhancing the user experience for sports fans and event-goers. Multiplayer online games rely on WebSockets to provide immediate feedback and enable players to interact in real time. Additionally, the server or client can also handle errors by sending error frames to indicate issues with the connection.

Gaming Applications

The client and the server can both start communication and send messages independently. Messages sent over WebSockets can be in the form of text, binary, or control frames. Text frames carry human-readable messages; binary frames can carry any type of binary data, and control frames are used for managing the connection, such as opening, closing, and error handling. Once the handshake is successful, a persistent connection is established. Unlike traditional HTTP, which uses short-lived connections for each request/response cycle, a WebSocket connection remains open continuously.

Each WebSocket frame sent by the client to the server needs to be masked with the help of a random masking-key (32-bit value). This key is contained within the frame, and it’s used to obfuscate the payload data. However, when data flows the other way around, the server must not mask any frames it sends to the client. When the connection is established and alive the communication takes place using the same connection channel until it is terminated. Using WebSocket creates a whole new usage pattern for server side applications. While traditional server stacks such as LAMP are designed around the HTTP request/response cycle they often do not deal well with a large number of open WebSocket connections.

Are WebSockets synchronous or asynchronous?

The connection will normally stay open and idle until either the client or the server is ready to send a message. WebSocket is a protocol that allows for a persistent TCP connection between server and client so they can exchange data at any time. With it, clients can receive updates from the server in real time without polling or other workarounds, resulting in a more responsive and interactive user experience. One important consideration when using this is ensuring that they are used securely. In particular, it’s essential to ensure that the WebSocket connection is authenticated correctly and that all data sent over the connection is encrypted to prevent eavesdropping or tampering.

It’s not a question of whether one is better than the other but which technology is more appropriate for a given use case. If a web application requires frequent updates or real-time communication, then WebSockets may be the better choice. HTTP may be more appropriate if a web application primarily sends requests to a server to retrieve data. In many cases, a combination of both technologies may be used to provide the best user experience. With WebSockets, there’s no need for multiple HTTP requests and responses. Both the client and the web server can initiate the closing handshake.
