On July 18, 2024, Suzuki Motor Corporation advised its dealer network to stop selling and delivering specific 2023 and 2024 V-Strom 800DE and 800DE Adventures. The worst-case situation on affected motorcycles includes rear tyres breaking, distorting, or separating from the carcass.
Considering the nature and extent of this problem, Suzuki cannot verify the percentage of bikes impacted. Suzuki Motor USA estimates that 1,688 motorcycles may be affected in the US.
No known cause exists; however, impacted motorcycles can have Sumitomo rear tyres that commonly shatter or distort. Suppose a rider fails to observe cracking and deformation. In that case, the tread may separate from the tyre, increasing the risk of an accident.
Suzuki claims that more rear wheel and tyre vibration during operation indicates a problem. Tyre breaking, deformation, and tread separation can enhance vibration. While keeping this in view, Suzuki directed its dealers to stop selling the bikes and stop riders from riding them until recall servicing.
The effects are the 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE and DE Adventure bikes (DL800DE), which were made from March 15 to November 20, 2023.
Early reports of problems in V-Storm 800DE
Suzuki’s chronology reveals that rear tyre problems started on May 8, 2024. More reports of rear tyre failure emerged in May and June 2024. Suzuki investigated but discovered no change in supplier output that would have caused the problem. On June 17, 2024, Suzuki Motor Corporation temporarily stopped global V-Storm 800DE and 800DE Adventure bike shipping.
Suzuki continued its research and issued a safety recall in July 2024. It told dealers to stop selling and delivering bikes and owners to stop riding them while it investigated the matter.
Suzuki V-Storm 800DE and 800DE Adventure owners can resolve this problem with appropriate documentation and be entitled to a refund. Suzuki claims they are working on a fix.
