BMW Unveils the E-Power Roadster Prototype!

There are lots of electric motorcycles out or in the pipeline these days. It’s no surprise to see BMW jump on the bandwagon. The company introduced the Vision DC Roadster way back, but there hasn’t been much talk about it from the Bavarian company ever since.

And here is the E-Power Roadster. It is their electric motorcycle prototype. Several European journalists were invited by BMW to come and check out the motorcycle. It looks like a spare parts motorcycle with an advanced electric powertrain. According to RideApart, the front end of the bike is the same as S 1000 R and the back end is the same as R 1200 RS. The bike is still a concept, so at this stage, BMW has focused on the powertrain and not the rest of the machine. We would say that the final product will be more appealing.

Nonetheless, the bike will ride from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. That’s very fast as the bike weighs 639 pounds. The bike can recharge a distance of three miles for every minute it’s on the fast charger. This means that it takes 30 minutes to reach 90% of its battery capacity.

The electric powertrain components are adapted from the BMW automotive business side. The bike utilizes a 13 kWh battery and a long-wheelbase electric motor from China-only 7-series. The bike can travel between 125 and 185 miles per charge, and the electric motor is good for 136 hp and 147 lb-ft of torque.

The range isn’t there yet, but it’s nice to see BMW moving to something here.

Ninebot Apex – the New Electric Motorcycle Powerhouse From Segway!

In true Segway style, the company immediately took something that looked pretty cool and tried to make less cool by calling it a Super Scooter. Still, if you overlook Segway’s attempt to bewilder their latest creation, the Ninebot Apex Concept is actually pretty nice-looking. It looks like a genuine electric sports bike.

There’s little detail about the bike at this time. Everything we know is coming from MoreBikes. According to this them, the bike will have a top speed of 125 mph and will have acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. That’s all we know about it.

The range of the bike is unspecified, and we think this is going to be the key factor here, as well as the size. The bike is quicker than the Harley LiveWire and gives just about any other electric bike something to worry about. The question will be whether it can travel beyond the competition or be cheaper than the competition. If so, Zero, Harley, Energica, and Lightning Motorcycles could all have a new and serious rival in their market.

Tesla May Be Building an Electric Dirt Bike!

Tesla showed its new Cybertruck recently. The reveal caused a lot of uproars. Also, the Tesla four-wheeler ATV was a small part of the Cybertruck demonstration. It has recently been announced that the four-wheeler will enter development sometime in the future. Even more recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk discussed the possibility of an electric dirt bike.

Musk tweeted: “Electric dirt bikes would be cool too”. He referred to a question asked about the ATV and the potential updates on it. Musk said that Tesla was going to try to get the ATV out at the same time that the truck is coming out, but he failed to say when the dirt bike would come out if it ever would.

If you’re hoping for a Tesla road bike, don’t count on it just yet. Musk said Tesla wasn’t going to do mountain bikes. He found them too dangerous and said he nearly died on a motorcycle when he was 17 and got hit by a truck.

We don’t put too much faith in Musk saying that he wouldn’t do a road bike. If he is able to get autonomous vehicle technology to the point where he wants it, an electric motorcycle that can be detected by autonomous car technology actually makes complete sense. It’ll be fascinating to see what’s will happen with Tesla and electric bikes in the coming years. We would really love to see the Tesla electric dirt bike!

The Chinese Baby Harley is Ready for Production!

A while back, Harley announced that they would be partnering with a Chinese production company to create a smaller 338cc bike, the Baby Harley. Now that the bike is ready for production, some of the official concept renderings are circulating online.

Harley-Davidson teamed up with Qianjiang, a Chinese company, to build its motorcycle. Qianjiang also produces Benelli bikes, so the Benelli 302S and the new Harley will have strong links. According to Bennetts, the name of the HD350 Project is just what the bike was named at the event in which the two companies signed off onto the concept. The next move is to actually make a bike. It’s not clear if that’s the official name that Harley is going to have. There is a probability that they’re going to use another name.

Visually, the HD350 looks considerably different from the Benelli 302S. It’s amazing how much a new tank, a different seat, new fenders, a different handlebar, and a more conventional headlight can transform the look of a vehicle. Under the hood, we believe that it will be fairly similar to the Benelli 302S. That means a steel trellis-style frame, a low-swooping and stubby exhaust, and a large mono-shock in the rear.

With all this in mind, this could be a good bike, no matter how you feel about the fact that it was designed by Qianjiang. If you are hyped to see this bike on European or American highways, you’ll be disappointed. Baby Harley is for Asian markets only. We presume it won’t see its launch outside those markets anytime soon.

Yamaha and Game Over Cycles Collaborate to Create a Custom Niken

The Niken is a very strange motorcycle. It is certainly unique and innovative. This specific one is the design of Game Over Cycles in collaboration with Yamaha. It is the oddest of them all. The motorcycle was shown at the CUSTOMBIKE-SHOW 2019 in Bad Salzuflen, Germany. At the exhibition, the bike won the appropriate Craziest Bike award. We say that it certainly deserved that prize.

Stainislaw Myszkowski, the Game Over Cycles boss, said it was groundbreaking to some people and divisive to others. That’s why he wished to work on a customized one. The machine underwent a dramatic transformation.

Myszkowski says:

“We changed the whole body. All plastic elements have been replaced by aluminum, thanks to which the vehicle’s shapes have become more sharp, even aggressive, without losing its aerodynamic properties. Bearing in mind Niken’s speed one can say, that now this motorcycle cuts the air almost like a samurai sword.”

The challenging task was to make every component work with all the moving bits of the Niken. There’s a lot going on with the bike’s leaning system, and that put some obstacles in the way of the bike builders. They had to make sure that each unique component was designed to function with the revolutionary design of the bike. Over 1,400 man-hours went into creating the bike into the final custom design.

Piaggio Enters the EV Market With the Ape E-City!

Piaggio’s charming and iconic three-wheel hauler is converting to electric power! The name of the new model is Ape E-City.

Rickshaws are a staple in South East Asia where they are used as taxis, delivery vehicles, or even as street food stalls. Now, thanks in part to India’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) program, the Ape is becoming electric. FAME encourages the sale of electric vehicles, specifically two and three-wheeled electric vehicles. To encourage that, they offer a decrease in sales tax from 12% to 5%.

The Ape E-City will have a battery swap system with big, flattened batteries low in the vehicle, which you can replace at automated service stations. This will keep the little Piaggio vehicles working longer, a task that is important considering their role in the economy.

The E-City is on sale for 197,000 Indian Rupees ($2800) which compares well with the gas-powered version. The Ape is now available as a 50cc two-stroke, 197cc four-stroke, 395cc four-stroke, and 435cc single-cylinder diesel. Prices vary from just $2,000 for the Ape 50 to approximately $3,500 for the Ape Plus diesel.

Battery swap technology is the most intriguing part of this release. It allows you to quickly and conveniently turn on a fully charged battery and resume functions. That eliminates the downtime and range anxiety that blights electric vehicles. It is also noteworthy that nations like India are driving this campaign.

Piaggio’s effort to streamline this years-old format is praise-worthy. It is likely to result in further technological developments that make electrification a more viable alternative for an increasing range of motorcycles. We’re living in exciting times for sure!

Honda Introduces its Benly Electric Scooter To the Market!

Honda unveiled its Honda e:Technology system at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show in October 2019. One component of the system, the Benly E scooter, is about to go into development. This is the electric version of the Benly. Benly is a durable delivery scooter that Honda is currently selling to businesses in Japan. The Benly E is expected to ship to business customers in April 2020.

That part is good news. What is the bad news then? Honda is only planning on selling 200 of these per year, to begin with. Four models will be available: the Benly E:I, the Benly E:II and the Pro variants of these Benly models. The Pro versions come with:

  • a large front box,
  • a large rear carrier
  • knuckle guards
  • regular foot brake system

Each sold Benly E will come with two Honda Mobile Power Packs and two designated MPP chargers. Prices vary from 737,000 yen ($6,738) for the regular Benly E to 748,000 yen ($6,839) for Pro models.

While the initial lower production output of these compact scooters is a bit of a downer, perhaps it will change in the future. Honda says that the reason for the production output limitation is the maintenance of suitable social responsibility levels.

Companies that want Benly E scooters in their facilities must sign an agreement with Honda. The agreement guarantees that they must comply with Honda’s sale of their used batteries.

Electronic waste is a growing concern and something that will only become more severe as more people begin using and replacing batteries in their electric vehicles. It’s an impressive move on Honda’s side. Ideally, it is a move that can hold on to at larger volumes as Honda delivers more electric vehicles on the market.

Indian is Probably Working On An Adventure Bike

Right now, the motorcycle market is all about adventure bikes. Harley’s getting into the game with Pan America, Triumph’s got a new Tiger 900, Suzuki’s got a new V-Strom, and there’s a lot more. According to ADV Pulse, there’s some released information about a new Indian adventure bike that could come soon. Its name is Apollo for now.

According to the released information, the model will come out in 2021 and will have a powerful 1203cc engine. The Apollo, if that’s really the name Indian is going to use for this adventure bike, looks like it could come in a variety of different setups. There’s going to be a tracker version, a street version, and an adventure bike.

This move makes perfect sense for Indian. Polaris owns Indian, and they definitely know its off-road performance vehicles. They will certainly use some of that experience and equipment in the new Apollo.

The one, low, fuzzy picture that circulates looks a bit like the Indian FTR1200. The Apollo prototype, and the adventure bike itself, will be at the top of the FTR1200 range. It’s going to be very interesting to see how this continues.

Prices are Now Available for New 2020 BMW Motorcycles!

BMW revealed no less than four bikes for 2020 at EICMA 2019. One is a second concept based on the company’s super-sized Boxer engine. Another three models will land in the dealerships in 2020. The pricing of the newer models has finally been announced.

With a base price of $8,995, the new 2020 BMW F 900 R starts things off sub-$10k. The roadster comes with:

  • a colored TFT display with BMW Motorrad connectivity
  • LED lighting
  • automatic stability control (ASC)
  • two riding modes
  • adjustable brake
  • clutch levers
  • ABS

The 2020 F 900 XR provides a similar features list at a cost of $11,695. Key features include:

  • ABS
  • colored TFT display with BMW Motorrad connectivity
  • LED lighting
  • stability control
  • two riding modes
  • adjustable brake, and clutch levers
  • self-canceling turn signals
  • adjustable windshield

You can adjust the seat height from 30.5 to 34.2 inches. The options on offer on the F 900 XR are like those available on the R with the addition of a body color-matching set of cases. The model is available in three colors: Racing Red, Light White, and Galvanic Gold Metal.

What about the 2020 S 1000 XR? Its base price starts at $17,645 and you can choose from two designs: Racing Red with White Aluminum Metallic Matte or Ice Gray paint jobs.

Standard equipment on the XR flagship features:

  • four riding modes
  • electronic suspension adjustment
  • pannier racks
  • ABS
  • hill start control
  • a 6.5-inch full-color TFT screen
  • LED lighting

A range of accessories is available as an option, including Dynamic ESA Pro with two damping modes, adjustable damping lights, LED auxiliary lights, carbon components such as an engine guard as well as a collection of side and top cases.

The three new models are expected to be available in dealerships sometime in 2020—probably in springtime for a new riding season.

Honda Produced Its 400 Millionth Motorcycle Since 1949

That’s a bunch of motorbikes!

Honda is one of the few still active businesses that began their lives as a maker of motorcycles. In 1949, the newly founded company rolled out the first proper motorcycle, the Dream D-Type. Fast-forward seven decades later, and Honda remains one of the industry’s most recognized brand names to this day. In 2019, the company achieved several important milestones, including its 400 millionth motorcycle production.

To Honda, 2019 seems to have been a good year. Not only has the brand launched some new bikes that have received a lot of publicity (Fireblade, CT125, Africa Twin, etc.), 2019 is also the year we celebrated the 50th birthday of the Japanese superbike, a milestone set by the launch of the Honda CB750 Four in 1969.

2019 also marks the 50th anniversary of Honda CB750 Four, the first Japanese superbike.

The company has now announced the launch of its 400 millionth motorcycle in order to wrap things up on a high note. Given that the company manufactures the world’s best-selling motorcycle, the Super Cub, it makes sense. Honda celebrated 100 million Super Cubs production in 2017, meaning that the model alone accounts for more than a quarter of Honda’s motorcycles since its inception.

It took the company nearly 20 years to reach its first 10 million units produced. Motorcycles are now being made at a rate of about 20 million a year. The industry has changed as the times did for sure! In 2014, when the counter hit 300 million, the previous turning point was reached. It took Honda only five years to add another 100 million to its records.

What is the market share of Honda?

India and Indonesia account for more than 50% of the mentioned production. That is not a big surprise! What about the United States? It isn’t even specified in the chart. Together with Asia, which accounts for 620,000 units between April 2018 and March 2019, it is included in the “other” slice of the pie chart.
